Like most people we were planning for our retirement and we had reached the stage when we could see it happening whilst we were still young enough to enjoy it. There were however two factors which we hadn’t given enough thought too, that of health and falling investment returns.

Three and a half years ago I was going about my day-to-day business when I injured my back – and suddenly found myself out of work after being with the same company for the past 13 years.

I was the wrong side of fifty with a back injury – who would employ me? I felt worthless, ready for the scrap heap.

Then one day I was invited to an "Open Evening" for a company called "Forever Living Products". I liked what I saw – but with my lack of confidence I wasn’t sure I could succeed, but here was a company prepared to give me a chance. Not only did they give me a chance – but also they actively encouraged and supported me every step of the way.

Here I am three years along the line with a flourishing part time home-based business, a growing income and a sense of achievement. I’m also healthier than I’ve been for years, have an improved lifestyle, and lots of new friends. But most of all I have my confidence back and I feel worthy again.

After 40 years in a conventional workplace, firstly as an Engineer, and for the last 20 years as manager of a "Business Systems and Development Department" for a major Multi-National Company, I was looking forward to an early retirement and a well-earned rest.

It wasn’t long before I realised that my company pension supplier and myself disagreed on my monthly income requirements, and if I continued to spend at the same rate, 40 years of savings and investments would very soon disappear.

I didn’t want to change my lifestyle, I didn’t want to return to work and I didn’t want to see all my assets dwindle. As I still have a number of years before my state pension starts, I had to find a way of increasing my finances.

So what were the alternatives open to me – well, I could do nothing (not a real option), I could go back to full or part time conventional employment (yuk) or perhaps run my own business from home where I could set the agenda on when, where and how much work I would do.

I decided to join Lorna in her Forever business part time and together in less than three years we have generated a residual index linked income (i.e. pension) almost as large as my forty-year company pension - and this income is increasing month on month.
